Teaching our Children to Save April 24, 2013

Today is national teach children to save day. This is a valuable lesson that many people wish they had been taught earlier in life. A lot of debt could be avoided if only someone had helped them learn early on the benefits of delayed gratification.

Today i am going to work with my daughter and tell her about saving. Admittedly, she is too young for complete understanding but the sooner i start explaining it and make it a habit for me to talk to her about it the more likely she is to pick it up. Being a good example is also a good way to show your children the benefits of saving and how to do it. Finances are typically a taboo subject in many houses, but why not let your children in on how money is spent and saved in your household. It will benefit them greatly down the road.

you could start them out with a piggy bank of their own and let them save some money they have earned from helping around the house. After they have saved enough for a small toy you could take them to the store. This will really send home how wonderful delayed gratification can be. They will be proud that they saved enough money to buy something all of their own.

I hope i can be a good example to my daughter and help her learn how to save. Now, where can i find a cute piggy bank?

It’s the month of the Military Child April 12, 2013

April is also the month for celebrating the military child. These children are resilient, well traveled, and often forgotten by the public. Its hard moving all the time and always being the new kid. This month every year activities occur on every post/base to celebrate just how special these children are. And remind them that they are not forgotten.

This month take the time to thank a military family for all the sacrifices they give so we can enjoy our freedom.

April is Autism Awareness Month April 10, 2013

As some of you may know April is Autism awareness month. This is a cause near and dear to my heart after working with several awesome autistic children/young adults while working through college. Autism did not define who they were it just made them even more special then they already were. They saw the world in ways i still wish i could see it.

Due to this fact i created my Autism awareness line of jewelry. From the sale of these items i donate to an Autism research center each year. Im so glad i can make and share these items with you and i hope you pass along to friends and family where to get them. I would love nothing more then this year to be the year a cure is discovered.

Until next time,

What’s your story? March 20, 2013

Today is world storytelling day. Hearing this reminds me of how back in the olden days history was mainly passed down through storytelling. Tales of heroes and villains, wars, triumphs, and losses all passed through each generation through a storyteller. Children gathered round to hear. Adults reminisced about hearing the same stories as children. It was a magical time.

We dont have many storytellers today. The older generation has been put away in nursing homes and forgotten about. Its rare that anyone will take time from their schedule to talk to that generation and hear the stories of the past. OUR past. How sad that we have forgotten one of the most wonderful aspects of our history as Americans.

So today, or sometime this week, ask your grandma, your grandpa, or an older relative to tell you a story about the past. And even if you’ve heard it before sit and listen so one day you can pass on that bit of history to your grandchildren.

Until Next Time,

How Green are you? February 12, 2013

Besides Valentine’s Day, this week is also National Green week. I feel my family is pretty ‘green’. We recycle everything possible, dont buy many processed foods so no packaging waste, have stopped using paper towels and are using reusable ones instead, make my own laundry detergent, shampoo, dishwasher detergent, cleaning supplies and cloth diaper our baby. We try to change one thing a month to be more ‘green’ and earth friendly.

Since getting rid of so many chemicals in our house, its amazing the difference we feel! Many of my allergies are gone! I used to get random rashes, runny nose and eyes, post nasal drip etc. Now, nothing! i almost dont know what to do with myself without having some problem to treat. LOL All in all i have to say that this change has been very good for us and if i had to do it all over again, i wouldnt hesitate.

How ‘green’ is your family? Have you noticed any difference in your life since making the change?

Until Next Time,

Shannon H.
